Week 4 Key It: Poster A Stanley's Cup

Poster A

Comic book style poster featuring art by the incredible Nathen Wahl. When we decide to do the graphic novel of Stanley's Cup it will have this aesthetic! Stanley St. Clair will menacingly wield the fantastic power that is the One True Cup, while Lord Beaverton borrows the abilties of good citizens to endow Stanley with the superpowers. It will kick all kinds of ass!

Week 4 Key It: Poster B Stanley's Cup

Poster B

A photographic approach to the poster. Simple yet delivers all of the key concepts. Stanley and Lord Beaverton are that little bit of good in bad world. Stanley works as the keeper of hockey's greatest trophy. Lord Beaverton is a trapped soul inside the same trophy. Together they solve mystery, fight crime, and keep the true power of the one true cup a secret.

Some of the ideas thrown around for the poster. We really wanted to have mystery pulp novel cover. Channeling the ghosts of Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew. Another feel we wanted to 'borrow' was the '50's theatre cards. Each one of these would have been amazing!

Inking in Progress

Inking in Progress

Artist and designer Nathen Wahl started with pencil sketches and then inked them in the traditional comic book method. This wasn't just a 'do magic on photoshop' (mind you some was), This is all about old school comic art. Nothing beats having a true artist draw you an amazing picture, then ink it, then paint it...

Work In Progress

Work In Progress

Artist and designer Nathen Wahl's magic desk. What makes it magic? It turns pieces of plain old paper into something amazing. Though his fingers are most likely stained with ink and artist's tears, the production crew of Stanley's Cup can assure you he's a great guy.

Old School Hand Lettering

Old School Hand Lettering

Artist and designer Nathen Wahl does his own shading too! We don't send our half finished work to the far end of the world to pay children pennies on the dollar to shade our art. Not us. No way! We went halfway across the planet to Saskatoon to get it done. Just amazing work.

Layout

Layout

Different versions of the final poster layout as Nathen moved the work into the digital realm. Stanley's Cup is lucky to have artists of many different stripes in their contact list. You can see the comicbook versus pulp novel titling.

Stanley in super hero mode. Love it. I like both these posters but A has a real edge to it. Great work team of Stanley!
