You guys are great! I really like your idea. "Throw away" characters can be great parts of shows or films! Would totally watch a show based off this!

I am constantly waiting to see what these guys do next. I really like that they get beat up probably more than they lay down an a$$ kickin'. They are memorable characters that seem to be irrelevant to the main script. That's what makes them so good!

My favourite two things about your project are:
    1) Making usual throw away characters the focal point of the show
    2) Using theme of physical comedy as your main driver. Physical comedy is always funny...it is always funnier when thing "happen," instead of being talked about that excited me about this project.

My one critique would be that, that style of comedy loses your female audience very quirky, if it gets too violent. I think the violence is funny within the context of moments being "stunts" etc. and doesn't seem like people are actually getting hurt on screen all the time.

Great job guys! Keep it up!

Although most of us are too upright and pious to admit it, the "I wish I could just do something illegal to make some quick cash" is a not uncommon fantasy. It's always fun watching funny actors live out this fantasy in a comedic fictional setting, while also reminding us that "easy money" really doesn't exist!

I'm not sure if what makes this show different isn't just a spin on what makes this show a little rough around the edges. I think that the concept is great and the people behind it are really on a good track, but I feel like when I am watching it that as a whole it needs more polish. Hopefully they will have the chance in future weeks challenges to really make this great concept shine.

You're absolutely right, Travis. And we're hoping that CBC and $500K can help us with that polish :) We're motivated, creative, and...well... WE think we're pretty funny ;) but having some studio weight and experience to take Goons to the next level is exactly what we're looking for.

Thanks Byrona, the whole no-name concept was actually an accident of early production. We never got around to picking names when we started the series for youtube and it never came up in writing or performance. A few episodes in we realized what we'd done and decided to stick with it!

I found the joke at the beginning of your video quite funny about considering to tone it down in the violence. In all seriousness though, I'm not too sure how you plan to keep a show funny when your general intentions are to injure others. I think it's a really fine line between being funny and going a bit too far with the violence. Good luck with the competition though, I sure you guys can pull it off!

Great comment, Christina. We are writing the show in such a way that injury is never the primary goal of the Goons. They're just trying to make a living and it just so happens that the only marketable skills they've got are their fists :P Furthermore the violence is ALWAYS... ALWAYS there to serve the comedy, never the other way around.

This was actually my fave from you guys yet, ending nailed it for me haha. We can relate to a show with nameless lead characters entertaining through violence (Geoff and the Ninja). Where do you find something to ground it outside of that though? Our concept has Geoff to balance Ninja, do you have any significant characters to balance the Goons, or are you going balls to the walls with it?

    Ryan McNeill's Photo
Ryan McNeill B. 0  posted 10 years ago

Great question, Jeremy. The majority of successful comedies always seem have at least one relatable character to ground the audience (Ann in Parks and Rec, Michael in Arrested Development, Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace). We're taking a slightly different approach where the grounding factor is the world. The Goons are larger than life characters that exist in a real world. Many of the people they meet will be other colorful types but the general environment and the average people living in it will be true to life. As for the Goons themselves, Goon #1 played by Malcolm Masters is the most level headed and will provide some foothold for the audience.

I'm really looking forward to this one. While technically the show about throw away characters has been done (Space Janitors, for example) they always tend to steer towards them becoming main characters, whereas yours definitely looks like it's avoiding that. (Them not having names really sells that) That's going to make it very unique.
